Kowanyama, 2024

Location: Cape York, QLD
Dates: 8th to 12th August 2024

Kowanyama, guess who!

Kowanyama means “place of many waters” in the Yir Yoront language. The community includes the Kokoberra, Yir Yoront [or Kokomenjen] and Kunjen clans, who each have language and other cultural differences.

Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire consists of beautiful and unique wetlands and delta mangroves in the north, extending to the bushland forest country of the central peninsula.

Greater than 1000 people now live in Kowanyama, making it one of the largest communities on the Cape York Peninsula. Kowanyama's Aboriginal people continue to identify strongly with their ancestral countries and with the languages, stories, songs, dances, and histories associated with those countries.

“Ancestors Protection” By Brenton Bowen, Guugu Yimithirr People

This artwork tells the story of Kowanyama community's hunting and gathering traditions. At its centre lies a shield, representing the ancestors' protection as the hunters embark on their journeys.

Boomerangs frame the shield, symbolizing the ABF tour's return to Kowanyama for yet another opportunity to spend time with to the community members and spend time out on country.

Green meeting places in the artwork represent hunting in the bush, while blue meeting places signify hunting in the water. These vibrant spots highlight the community's connection to the land and its resources.

Journey lines weave through the design, illustrating the paths hunters take to gather food. Guided by the ancestral shield, they navigate the land with skill and respect, ensuring their traditions live on.

This artwork stands as a testament to the resilience, unity, and enduring spirit of the Kowanyama people, preserving their heritage for future generations.
